We have all heard of using bonds to offset the volatility of stocks. The ebs and flows of the market "should be" countered with bond behavior in your portfolio. Therefore, your investment should be able to withstand the ups and downs and sustain gradual but steady gowth (the staight line theory).
The last few years have shown us, as investors, there needs to be more to it and this theory is not complete. To those investors, we pose the question: "what individual holdings do you own?" The vast majority of REIT investors have no idea what properties are part of the REIT product. Even worse is the fact they have no say in which properties are held, sold or purchased! For some investors, this is just fine.
